Time to stop and smell the flowers...

Aren't these just the most perfect orchids you have ever seen? I took them from Mr Man's Christmas party function...I'm turning into my mother, she always walks out with the floral arrangements.

Anyway I'll get to the point...when do we really have time to 'Stop and smell the flowers?'
I have been reflecting on this today. You see I've had a few market events in the past few weeks which have all been super hard work and unfortunately a big disappointment. I know my stuff is pretty awesome, but when you spend weeks making stuff, get up at 6am, pack and unpack the car several times all to come home with not much to show, your ego takes a big blow. It makes me wonder why I put my self through it all?

And then today I had the most fortuitous meeting with a store owner who cleared me out of quite a lot of my stock for her new shop. Will blog about it soon.

So today's decision to cancel next Sundays market and all my 2011 bookings has left me feeling a little giddy.
I'll need to take my hay fever tablets this week because I'll be sniff sniff sniffing those flowers, enjoying my freedom and lack of commitments. I now feel free to create for real!

Expect some interesting things here soon, maybe not 'marketable' but that's the whole idea...

Trust me I would've taken them two. They're absolutely gorgeous.

Sometimes things don't work out and that's ok. Life happens, things happen. That's when you take the time to re-evaluate the situation. As strange as this might sounds, it's good that you went through that experience of going to markets. Because now you know that it didn't work out quite the way you thought it would. I guess it's better to know then to be left wondering. Besides you're stuff is awesome and markets are always hit and miss things, often more miss then hit. But you're stuff will sell regardless because they're just that awesome. I mean your stock just got bought out. Awesome right?

Oh and i can't wait to hear about that story soon.

So take those hay fever tablets, smell all the flowers you can and take some time out to live life a little more.

The orchids are gorgeous! I took some time out to smell the flowers in my own garden yesterday, which was a good thing to do at this crazy time of year!

It's interesting to read about your markets experience too. I used to do markets when I first started making a very long time ago. They were so exhausting and sometimes very disappointing or frustrating. And in the end I just stopped and promised myself I'd not do them ever again!

But lately I've been wondering about the wisdom of this. Your post seems to confirm what my last experience was though!

I am sorry that you have found the markets disappointing (including Sugar & Spice), that would be very frustrating.

Enjoy smelling those flowers!!

Unfortubately Melbourne and its surrounds are completely over saturated with markets and people just aren't spending any money at the moment (I know that I'm certainly not spending either).
I have only one more market to go next weekend, and nothing booked for next year. It'll be lovely to just have a break - the packing and unpacking kills me!

Oh I would love to make Emma a hoodie!

I was in bed by 10 pm after the market ( for the first time in 2 weeks-normally too busy sewing!!!) and just couldn't stop thinking about the whole day and market thing! It's def time to let go -for now!
Hooray for having time to myself and hanging out with the little man instead of sewing our heads off!

Good for you. I did the market thing for about 5 years, and then opened a home studio twice a month, and honestly, it nearly killed me. These last few months I've spent a LOT of very late nights rebuilding my website, and just two days ago I thought - let it go. It's Christmas holidays... it's ok to just keep up right now. So I've got some small things to do for the business, but I sewed stockings for my own kids and went bowling and am moving the furniture around. And it feels ok. Still need to make money, but that's something I can ponder on for a bit. There's always tomorrow, and the future is bright!

That is awesome and so encouraging! It is so difficult to make handmade stuff and survive on it both financially and emotionally! I tried it for about a year before finally calling it quits. It's nice to be able to make things for friends and family though. I had a little Etsy shop: Lula in London. Maybe some day I'll get a few things back up there. In the mean time, it's fun to read other success stories! Have fun!
