A Book Review by Jo...“It’s a Jungle in here”, written by Steve Wide and illustrated by Michelle Mackintosh.
“It’s a Jungle in here” is one of those children’s books that tick all the boxes for me when I am looking for a book for a child.
The story revolves around a boy named Jimmy and his family, namely his Dad, who comes home late from work one night exclaiming, “It’s a jungle out there.” The story then takes its cue from this as Jimmy explores the literal meanings of lots of expressions, such as “Stop monkeying around” and “What a tall story”.
It is one of those stories that as a parent, we love. It has subtle adult appeal and is just the right length for a bedtime story. A couple of minutes max. Short and punchy and feel good. With the kind of illustrations that are a joy to explore with your child.
The illustrations just make this book. Funky, gorgeous colours, great graphics all put together with a bit of collage. Although I’m a sucker for collage in children’s books!
A fantastic book for both boys and girls, I would recommend it for ages 3 to 5. Lovely hardcover and about the size of a golden book, for comparison sake. Perfect size for little hands to handle. The author, Steve Wide, is a Melbourne writer, DJ and radio presenter. Even more of a reason to add this Made in Melbourne book to your child’s library.
I love this book and think it would be a real winner with every little person.
Available now in store and on Poppet in the Post.
