I just don't get it...

I went to this great talk today on local area marketing...you know, business stuff. Any way apparently you've got to have online presence these days, website (check), Blog (check), Facebook (check) and you absolutely must Twitter!
Being the NON-early-adopter that I am, I've resisted social networking sites for years. Recently I caved and joined Facebook. Strictly for business reasons...but now I really enjoy using it for personal stuff like sharing photos of Emma with faraway family and friends etc...
"But that's where I draw the line..." I told my sister"...you won't catch me tweeting!"
So when
Debra Templar, Retail Guru extraordinaire says you must Tweet, well then I may have to re-think my position.

So I've been trying to work it out, doing research...but I just don't get it!
Help me out here guys! Am I missing something? So far this is the most informative thing I've come up with, and it sort of re-enforces my position. And it's funny...

hilarious! I do Twitter for Wardrobe Refashion but i still don't quite get it sometimes. I just can't bring myself to be on there at all hours of the day. Thankfully i feed blog posts to it automatically and i add a few tweets now and again myself.

Verrry funny. I'm still laughing but I'm heartened to know that "its just a matter of time".... you'll get it.

In fact I've tweeted your very funny blog. www.twitter.com/DebraTemplar.

Pssst: It was a joy having you in my seminars. Let me know when you relent and get a twittername!

Cheers
Debra

Hi Poppet - love your tag line.

I found you because @DebraTemplar tweeted a link to your blogspot. See - that's what it is all about :)

For me Twitter has been a huge networking tool that doesn't involve having to walk into rooms full of strangers.

It generates word of mouth; it builds awareness; it engages you with potential suppliers and customers; it is even a bit of a market research tool as you can watch what people are chatting about.

And - yes - like Deb new clients have found me via Twitter.

It is just another link in the chain that is marketing.

Please check out one article I wrote on Twitter here: http://www.thebrew.com.au/BlogRetrieve.aspx?BlogID=1154&PostID=43124

And I have a PDF you can download which is guide to starting on Twitter http://www.thewoo.com.au/setting_up_twitter

Hope to see you tweeting soon

Well, I got to your post because of Twitter, via @DoTheWoo (Bambi) and @DebraTemplar. So, already you're getting the benefit of unique user traffic from Twitter. That's just the tip of the iceberg, I'm afraid.

I, too, wrote a post about Twitter and how it helped my business. If you're interested, read 6 Practical Ways Twitter Can Help Your Business:

http://www.globalcopywriting.com/6-practical-ways-twitter-can-help-your-business/

It's had a lot of good feeback on my blog and also on LinkedIn.

My advice would be not to spend a lot of time figuring it out. Just get out there and start. Soon enough, you'll start to see benefits. Keep focused on building a quality network and don't worry about being popular. 50 quality followers is way more valuable than 5000 people interested in sharing breakfast menus.

See you out there!

I too found you through Twitter - so it's working even when you're not the one doing the tweeting...

It takes a little while to get used to it - at least it did for me. I've only been on it since around Nov/Dec and I've found the longer I've been on it the more I'm getting the hang of it and am only just now starting to realise how to use it. So I think give it a go - watch what other people are doing - add a few comments yourself; start responding to others tweets and pretty soon you'll love it and realise the potential twitter has for both improving business and personal contacts. You aren't that different to many people, particularly those in small business. As a professional web designer, I still find quite a number resisting getting a web page!

Now, I found your post through Debra's tweet as well and thought that you might be interested in this remarkable story of how a Houston coffee shop doubled their business using Twitter. Perhaps with some imagination, you could do the same.... :-)

The video is a bit like saying "Cars are stupid, they only drive you to the pub".
Well, if that is where you steer it, yep it is stupid.
You are allowed to go other places with your car though, that's how you get value out of it.

Hi Cinti,
My deepest sympathies - I see you've just crossed over to the dark side and joined twitter.
I've been a blogger for years but don't get twitter either. Though I can see that what other people have said to you in these comments is valuable.
My favourite twitter SNAFU is when Richard Wilkins announced Jeff Goldblum's death on the Today Show. You can see the wash-up video on YouTube where Goldblum appears on the Stephen Colbert show absolutely destroying Wilkins.
